We are grateful to have had the chance to travel to one of our favorite countries—India—for our Fall 2020 lookbook, captured just before Coronavirus unfolded around the world. We chose Rajasthan’s Thar Desert for a dramatic location, and ventured outside of Jaipur, our home base, deep into the dunes to shoot these photos and video.
Why the Thar Desert? This collection was inspired by a life well-traveled. As you might know, fashion designers conceptualize their pieces well in advance of production, well over a year out. As a globally-inspired brand, we bring an appreciation of travel and adventure to every collection, but this line was extra special: in it we combined the traditional artisan techniques’ from our first two collections—such as kantha stitching and mirror work—with the introduction of the art of block printing and hand-loomed fabrics.
This collection is romantic, and a little more sumptuous than past collections, with luxe silks, hand-loomed fabrics, and rich colorways. As always, we wanted each piece to embody the effortlessness of more casual pieces you might pack for a long trip spent soaking up all that a new-to-you city has to offer.
Various regions in the Middle East make use of these techniques and more when crafting textiles, so for this collection we wanted to take you on a tour of some of their most extraordinary souks—marketplaces rich with color, texture, and history of the cultures they represent. These souks are the heart and soul of some of the oldest and longest-inhabited cities on Earth, so they are truly unlike anything many of us here in the US have ever experienced.
The Thar Desert (also known as The Great Indian Desert) is a spectacular landscape—sprawling dunes cover over 65,000 square miles of India—full of sweeping views and LOTS of wind! You might not believe it from the photos, but this desert is actually sometimes called “the world’s most civilized desert,” having been populated for thousands of years as well as rich in biodiversity. But we scouted this particular spot the day before—even though finding it in the dark at 4am the next day was a major challenge. Thankfully a local hopped on his camel and guided us to the site!
Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, bringing travel plans globally to a halt. But in a way, this only uncovers the heart behind these pieces—each detail is like a little discovery you travel back home with after a life-changing trip immersed in history, culture, and design, and of course, beautiful textiles. We hope you feel inspired by a life well-traveled, even if some of those plans have changed in 2020. Pre-order everything shown here and more in our Fall Collection!
